Nature Education & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
In the current times of climate change and global climate crisis, we must address the state of disconnectedness from nature and restore our lives of interdependence with the rest of nature. As an integral part of nature ourselves, we aim to orient children to learn ‘with’ nature, instead of learning ‘about’ nature. This marks a shift from ‘studying’ nature to ‘being’ with nature.
A healthy interaction with the natural non-human environment comprising earth, trees, birds, animals, water bodies etc. is instrumental for a child’s development. These elements of nature provide grounding and healing, apart from the essential nutrients and life material we draw from them as consumer goods. It is a critical part of social-emotional learning that children see themselves as part of the larger nature and be rooted in the sense of interdependence and connectedness with these elements constantly becoming aware of the changing nature of the physical world around us, how it impacts our lives and what would be our role in this.
Nature Walk
Nature Journaling
Waste Management
Our nature education sessions strive to build and establish children’s connection with their natural environment using interactive and immersive activities like nature walks, nature journaling, learning waste management etc. As children build awareness, their participation and voices in preserving the natural world around them will grow.
Rahul is a Teach for Nature Fellow by Bhoomi Network, through the fellowship he is working to bridge SEL and nature education in schools. Through hands-on activities like waste management projects, and ecosystem observation, children experience learning beyond textbooks.
To make environmental issues more relatable, we are documenting children’s stories through grassroots comics, allowing them to express their perspectives on nature and sustainability in creative ways.
